Granny squares are a classic crochet project. This blog post will teach you how to crochet a granny square.
I want to start sharing craft inspiration here because spending more time crafting is one of my goals for living my dream life. And since my blog is all about helping others to become the best versions of themselves, I want to create content to help you get in touch with your creative side and capitalize on the mental health benefits of doing crafts.
What to do with granny squares
Granny squares are fun to make, and there are so many options of what you can use them for. Once you master the traditional granny square, you can learn some of the many, fun variations on this pattern.
You can also vary the size to make different items. Small granny squares work great for coasters, while bigger ones make beautiful placemats.
If you want to go all out, you can even make a bunch of granny squares and connect them to make bags, blankets, and sweaters.
Full transparency, I like making granny squares just to make them. I enjoy crocheting more for the therapeutic, calming benefits than for actually making intricate designs. So, I like that granny squares are simple and allow me to capitalize on crocheting’s relaxing aspects. Plus, I think they look great lying out. Especially if you choose a color scheme that matches your house/room.
If you are interested in learning how to crochet, granny squares are a good place to start. Granny squares make for an easy, beginner-friendly crochet project. Check out the instructions below, along with videos, to learn how to crochet a granny square.

How to crochet a granny square (instructions)
Now onto the instructions. Full disclosure, this is my first time ever writing crochet instructions. So bear with me, please.
First, these videos cover the basic stitches you need to know for this project.
Granny Square Round One
To start, create a slip knot over your hook and chain four. Insert your hook into the first chain and slip stitch to join the two ends. This is the granny square’s center.
Next, chain two.
When creating granny squares, you will work with sets of three double crochets. This first chain two counts as the first double crochet.
Place two double crochets into the center opening. This completes the first set of double crochets.
Chain two. This chain two creates a corner.
Place three double-crochets into the center.
Chain two to create another corner.
Place three double crochets into the center.
Chain two to create the last corner
Join with a slip stitch into the first stitch you made.
You should now have a small square with four openings (one in each corner).
Granny Square Round Two
In the second round, you will place two sets of double crochets (separated by a chain two) in each corner.
You can continue with the same color yarn, or switch to a new color.
Insert your hook into one of the large openings in the corner. Loop your new strand of yarn over the hook and pull back through to the front. Yarn over and pull through (make sure to also bring the tail when you pull through.
Drop the tail. Chain two (this counts as your first double crochet).
Add two more double crochets into that opening (this completes your first set of double crochets).
Chain two
Add three double crochets into the same corner.
Repeat by placing a set of three double crochets, chain two, and another set of three double crochets in each corner.
Once you finish all of the corners, join them again with a slip stitch
Granny Square Round Three
Start in any of the corners (it doesn’t matter which one).
Add your next strand of yarn the same way as before (switching colors or sticking with the same color). Insert your hook into the large corner space. Loop your new yarn over and pull back through. Yarn over and pull through, bringing the tail with you.
In this round, you have the four corners, like in the first round. And you also have an additional opening on each side.
Let go of the tail and chain two
Place two more double crochets into that same space.
Chain two.
Place another set of three double crochets into that same space.
Place three double crochets into the side opening.
Repeat by placing a set of three double crochets, a chain two, and another set of three double crochets into each corner and a set of three double crochets into each side opening.
After repeating on every side, join with a slip stitch. You should see this taking the classic Granny Square shape. You can repeat this for as many rounds as you like. Just know that after each round, you will have one additional opening on each side to add a set of three double crochets into.
Once you are done, use a yarn needle to weave in any leftover threads hanging off your project.
Like I said at the beginning, you can find tutorials on how to join multiple Granny Squares to create different items. Personally, I just like making them to get in touch with my crafty side, and because I like how they look.
