Meet Jeet Tan of Jeet Tan Copywriting! Read this interview to get Jeet’s tips and thoughts on all things content creation, self-care, and work-life balance.
Thank you Jeet for sharing your valuable insight!
1. Hi, can you give me a quick introduction about yourself and what you do?
Hi, my name is Jeet. I’m a Malaysian copywriter based in Bangkok, Thailand. I basically help create a company’s marketing campaign.
2. How did you get started in your industry? What was the reason for it?
Well I started off as an intern for a YouTube channel called Asian Boss, they make videos talking about issues dealing with East Asia. This was back in 2016 where they only had 100k subscribers.
As I was helping manage their content platform, me and my colleague Hiroko, from HirokoTV started our YouTube channels around the same time.
That was how I got into content. Using my following I had a life coaching business with about 14 clients. Then after graduation, I worked with a few companies here and there as a social media marketer which eventually led me to starting my own writing agency.

3. Let’s talk about self-care, what’s your opinion on the state of the world and the mental health where you live?
In my opinion, the mental state of the world, at least in East and Southeast Asia is terrible. I think people have not been given the tools necessary to be self-reliant and self-independent. I think this has to do with the lack of access to knowledge.
4. What has been your experience balancing content creation with the other aspects of your life (another job, social life, hobbies, etc.)? Do you have any tips that have helped you?
I found that focus is really important in content creation. As part of my digital marketing strategy, I create content on YouTube, Instagram, Quora, and my blog.
But what we have to realize is that you cannot be in all platforms at the same time. Pick one and focus which will mean accepting that results in one area will mean other areas seeing less of a return.
There’s a sacrifice and a price you need to pay to pursue entrepreneurship or being self-employed. That may mean less of a social life or taking a pay cut.
On the other hand, if you do focus on your social life, or working more of a stable job while pursuing this as a side hustle – you should expect your results to be slower than someone that really puts his/her all.
Finding your right balance is key – some people have paid the price that’s why they are where they are now. I have friends that are full-time YouTubers now because they went all in and focused. Some on the other hand will take some time based on how much they are willing to put into their content creation game.

5. I see that you are interested in self-care. What does self-care mean to you? What are some of your self-care practices?
Self-care is everything for me. Growing up Chinese, I have had a lot of pressure from family and peers to be successful. But there were many times that I pursued an endeavor that wasn’t what I wanted but instead what my family expected of me. That led to some very nasty burnouts and near-death encounters from mental breakdowns.
So I believe self-care is very important. It’s simply knowing when to take a break, the positive affirmations you say to yourself, and doing things that you want to do not because someone else told you to do so.
Self-care is all about putting an investment into your emotional bank account. When your emotional bank account is at zero, then depression, suicidal thoughts, and other mental health issues will come up. But if your emotional bank account is high, you can achieve anything you want. More importantly, you’re living a fulfilled life – which is the point of living in the first place, to be happy.
